All six of us load into Skoll’s all-terrain vehicle for the ride over. Three human females and three Hyrrokin males. Skoll insists on taking our newly cleaned kittens with us. He’s always like that, never wanting to leave them behind.

Avery and Chloe cry out with joy when they see the two baby kitties. They’re freaking out over the fact that I rescued two kittens on my way off planet.

“Why did you name them that?” Chloe laughs. “It sounds like you’re about to eat them.”

I shrug and point at the devil who is gently placing them into a basket. “I didn’t name then, Skoll did.”

“This one is Snack because he’s a tiny being,” Skoll patiently explains, “and this one is Morsel because he looks delicious.”

Chloe and Avery stare in wonder at Skoll’s movements.

“Are you taking pictures of this male tenderly caring for these kittens?” Avery whispers in my ear. “Please tell me you’re documenting this and you’re ready to start posting it to Intelgram.”

“I haven’t, but I will now.”

“Thank you—all the females in the entire four sectors thank you.”

I bark out a laugh.

And then I try to get into the back seat with Chloe and a huge claw grabs my wrist, trying to redirect me to the front. “You’re with me,” Skoll growls.

I blink in surprise. Why the hell would he want me up front? Especially after he just loudly reminded everyone that I’m not his female and that he’s engaged to another? Why does he do this to me, run so hot and cold?

Avery meets my troubled gaze then says to Skoll, “Can I go up front too?” She places a hand on her round belly. “I’d love to sit next to Ariana.”

Skoll gives a curt nod and I give her a grateful smile. In minutes I’m in the front seat between Avery and a basket of kittens. Skoll puts me next to him, then places the basket between us both. He’s quiet the whole bumpy drive over while the rest of his passengers chat. And I stare at his profile occasionally, noting the tight grip he has on the steering wheel. What is going on with him?

Finally, we arrive at the geyser. A whole team of mining technicians has already set up a perimeter of equipment. The geyser is still spewing in all its glory. Skoll walks next to me as we survey the area, with his claw lightly touching the small of my back. He glares at the crew and acts like a grouch. And I’m embarrassed to admit I love the fact that he’s so close. But he’s engaged. Taken. Why is he teasing me like this?

Then we leave the crew to their work and move on to the warehouse.

“Is that a catapult?” Aegir immediately questions.

“Yes, it’s from the Fire Crusades.”

And soon the three males are crowded around the two-story war machine. I’m happy that Skoll has the opportunity to show off this collection to his friends. Why has he never done this before?

Meanwhile, Chloe and Avery are still stuck at the entrance, just as horrified as I was at all the work before us.
